Doyle Wayne ‘Hawk’ Weatherby

Doyle Wayne "Hawk" Weatherby passed peacefully on Sept. 5, at his home in Odessa after a short battle with lung cancer. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Martha.

Family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. He felt that funerals were a celebration of life and always wanted people to wear bright colors.

His Celebration of Life was at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Crossroads Fellowship.

He was born in Woodson, Texas, on May 21, 1933. He lived in Iraan and graduated high school in Breckenridge.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He was honorably discharged at the same rank as when he went in. He attended North Texas State University where he received his teaching certificate in history and met Martha, the love of his life, they were married in Fort Worth. His college degree afforded him the privilege of becoming the chief post hole digger for a canopy company. They moved to Odessa in 1959 after living in Fort Worth.

In Odessa, they raised two children, Kay Kay and Charlie Chas, while he worked for, Hughes Tool Company. Doyle then went to work selling grounds-keeping equipment to schools, colleges and also golf courses at Goldthwaite’s of Texas.

He then began the Doyle Weatherby Company, an independent chemical broker and sold to Halliburton, BJ, Western Co. and other small independent dealers. He was the co-founder of DorChem/Permian Chemical Co.; the originator of Ratliff Ranch Golf Links, the first municipal golf course in Odessa and developed Lil' Divot, a children's golf club.  Doyle also managed at Piggies BBQ.

He was a lifelong member of Antioch Christian Church. He was an adult Sunday school teacher for 20 plus years, he served as a deacon and an elder. He was also recognized as an elder emeritus.

He loved his wife Martha, his children, Kay Kay and Chas, their spouses, Roger and Marcy, his four grandchildren and his six great grandchildren. He also loved the Texas Rangers, golf, talking politics and history, anyone who could give him a good argument, laughing, a good practical joke, visiting with total strangers and hawking apples in the produce section of any grocery store.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Chas and Argieree Weatherby and a brother Ralph Dorwin Weatherby.

Survivors include his wife, Martha; one daughter Kay Kay Zimmerman and her husband, Roger of Hamilton; one grandson, Noah and wife, Penney of Flower Mound along with their three sons; one son, Charlie Chas Weatherby and his wife, Marcy along with their daughter, Casey Guerrero and her husband, Johnny of Odessa along with their two children, Lanie and Jett; their son, Kyle and wife, Stephanie of Round Rock, along with their son Charlie Duke.

He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
