J.C. Squyres

J.C. Squyres, age 90 of Breckenridge, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 24. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Charles Kuhn officiating. Interment will follow in the Breckenridge Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.

James Claude Squyres was born Dec. 23, 1925, in Breckenridge, to parents, Claude Albert Squyres and Toni Hudzietz Squyres. He graduated from Breckenridge High School, and then went on to serve in the United States Army Air Corps. On May 29, 1948, J.C. married Barbara Christie in Breckenridge. Mr. Squyres worked for Christie Oil beginning in 1948.

He later took over the business and it became Squyres Oil. He was a lifetime resident of Stephens County and enjoyed ranching, square dancing, and traveling with his family in their RV. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. Mr. Squyres was a pilot until the 1960s and loved talking about flying with his daughter, Jan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Toni Squyres; one brother, Dick Squyres; one sister, Jacqueline Newell; and one granddaughter, Melissa Pugh.

Mr. Squyres is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Squyres; two daughters, Karen Squyres, Jan Goodall and husband Gregg, all of Breckenridge; one brother, Fred Squyres of Wellington; one sister, Margie Stuteville of Olney; three grandchildren, Brad Starnes, Stephanie Luster and husband Lionel, and Travor Terrell; seven great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice and may be left at Morehart Mortuary.
