Fred Squyres

Fred Squyres age 96, of Wellington, died Sunday, Feb. 19.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Smith, pastor officiating. Graveside services, with full military honors, will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Breckenridge Cemetery. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.

Fred was born on March 23, 1920 in Marynell, Texas, to Claude A. and Tony Hudzietz Squyres. He graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1938. Attended Tarleton State and received his BS in Agronomy from Texas Tech University in 1951.

He married Ruby Smith on Jan. 15, 1944, in Phoenix, Arizona. She preceded him in death in 2003. He married Betty Winslett on May 15, 2004 in Wellington.

Fred served in the U.S. Army’s 104th Infantry Division in Europe, during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart during his service. He then served in the 36th Infantry Division of the Army Reserves, retiring in 1980 at the rank of Lt. Colonel, after 40 years of service.

He was a district conservationist with the USDA Soil and Water Conservation Service for 30 years in several locations including Wellington from 1953 to 1962, when he moved to Dumas. Fred worked for the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board for 10 years and then served on that board for 6 years, of which he was a past president. He retired and returned to Wellington in 1995 from Dumas.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Wellington Masonic Lodge #763 for over 65 years, Glynn Moore Post #6439 of the VFW, American Legion, Soil Conservation Society of America, and the NRA.

Fred was also preceded in death by a daughter Anna Rebecca Squyres in 1949, two brothers, and one sister.

He is survived by his wife Betty of Wellington; son Newell Squyres and wife Peggy of Plains; daughter Nancy Squyres of Angel Fire, New Mexico; step-son Skip Harrison of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two step-daughters Karen Walker and husband Jerry of Cleburne and Sandy Fowler and husband Russell of Amarillo; a sister Margie Stuteville of Olney; seven grandchildren Shannon Squyres, Robin Swimmer and Justin, Saber Hunter and Justin, Brett Squyres, Stormy Allen and Clint, Denver Pierce, and Stefanie Castenada and Cameron; six great-grandchildren Kellen, Kaysie, and Korie Hunter, Darian Squyres, Journey Lazos, and Kyger Swimmer.
