Virginia C. Ridgeway

Virginia C. Ridgeway, 73, died Monday, Aug. 22. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Breckenridge Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.

Virginia Carolyn Thompson was born on Nov. 9, 1942, in Taylor, Arkansas, to Harold Thompson and Hattie Hall Thompson. She married Bob Ridgeway on Feb. 14, 1983, in Springhill, Louisiana. She was a homemaker and a florist, and member of the People’s Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Ridgeway of Graham; one daughter, Carla Briscoe Hill and husband, John of Breckenridge; one step-daughter, Cheryl Ridgeway of Breckenridge; daughter-in-law, Linda Ridgeway of Durant, Oklahoma; a sister, Maxine Bailey of Camden, Arkansas; brothers, Billy Thompson of Springhill, Louisiana, Roger Thompson of Springhill, Dexter Thompson of Jena, Louisiana, and Dale Thompson of Houston; grandchildren, Ashtyn Elliott of Breckenridge, Laura Pilgrim and husband, Kevin of Abilene, Robert Ridgeway and wife, Tasha of Dennison, and Alicia Pitchford and husband, Scott of Durant, Oklahoma; several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Daryl Ridgeway, one sister, Eva Thompson, and five brothers, Gerald, James, Ray, Glynn, and Benny Thompson.

J.C. Squyres

J.C. Squyres, age 90 of Breckenridge, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 24. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Charles Kuhn officiating. Interment will follow in the Breckenridge Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.

James Claude Squyres was born Dec. 23, 1925, in Breckenridge, to parents, Claude Albert Squyres and Toni Hudzietz Squyres. He graduated from Breckenridge High School, and then went on to serve in the United States Army Air Corps. On May 29, 1948, J.C. married Barbara Christie in Breckenridge. Mr. Squyres worked for Christie Oil beginning in 1948.

He later took over the business and it became Squyres Oil. He was a lifetime resident of Stephens County and enjoyed ranching, square dancing, and traveling with his family in their RV. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. Mr. Squyres was a pilot until the 1960s and loved talking about flying with his daughter, Jan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Toni Squyres; one brother, Dick Squyres; one sister, Jacqueline Newell; and one granddaughter, Melissa Pugh.

Mr. Squyres is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Squyres; two daughters, Karen Squyres, Jan Goodall and husband Gregg, all of Breckenridge; one brother, Fred Squyres of Wellington; one sister, Margie Stuteville of Olney; three grandchildren, Brad Starnes, Stephanie Luster and husband Lionel, and Travor Terrell; seven great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Trinidad Sandoval, 91, died Sunday, Aug. 21. Funeral mass was held on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment followed in Breckenridge Cemetery. Rosary was said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.

Trinidad Navarro was born on June 7, 1925, in Aledo, Texas, to Ponciano Navarro and Anastasia Velasquez Navarro. She married Mike D. Sandoval on Sept. 14, 1946, in Breckenridge. She enjoyed, cooking, sewing, spending time with her grandchildren, and watching telenovelas. Mrs. Sandoval was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Torres and husband, Joe of Farmers Branch, Loretta Albizo of Fort Worth, Sally Mendoza and husband, Emilio of Breckenridge, Micki Robles of Breckenridge; sons, Mike Sandoval of Breckenridge and Jesse Sandoval and wife, Monica of Arlington; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, Micaela Sandoval, and son-in-law, Bennie Albizo.

Armando Silva, 61, died Sunday, Aug. 28. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment followed in the Breckenridge Cemetery and a rosary was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.

Armando was born on November 6, 1954, in Piedras Negras, Mexico, to Julio Silva and Esperanza Flores Silva. He married Juanita Yolanda Ornelas on July 23, 1977, in Eagle Pass. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and worked as a fork lift operator at Jonell Filtration.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Yolanda Silva of Breckenridge; daughters, Arlene Hernandez and husband, Ezquiel of Breckenridge, Amy Perez and husband, Mark of Breckenridge, and Angelica Silva of Breckenridge; sons, Alejandro Silva and wife, Kristie of Breckenridge, and Armando Silva Jr. and wife, Tiffany of Breckenridge; sisters, Hilda Sanchez of Eagle Pass, Rosie Guerra of Piedras Negras, Mexico and Mary Roasas of Abernathy; brothers, Julio Silva of Crystal City and Juan Silva of Spring Lake; 18 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and one grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Angel Silva, and a sister, Martha Silva.

David Alexander, age 40 of Breckenridge, passed away Saturday, Sept. 3. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Dennis Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the Post Oak Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 5, at Morehart Mortuary.

David Gene Alexander was born June 9, 1976, in Breckenridge, to parents, Terry Hash and Nancy Marie Pace. David attended schools in Breckenridge and graduated in Alaska. On Dec. 31, 2012, he married Markell Manuel in Breckenridge. He worked for Bison Drilling. David loved fishing with his son, shooting guns, collecting knives, riding four wheelers with his daughter and giving tattoos. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joyce and Kenneth Pace, Alfred Alexander, Lee Roy and Ruth Hash and Bessie Burnett.

David is survived by his wife, Markell Alexander; four children, Markus Jimenez, Colton Stimmler, Amythist Jimenez, Gracie Stimmler; his father, Terry Hash; his mother, Nancy Chappell and husband Carl; two brothers, Cody Hash, JR Alexander; two sisters, Leah McKee, Shelly Alexander; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Russell Monroe 'Sonny' Pendleton

Russell Monroe 'Sonny' Pendleton, age 87, of Breckenridge, passed from this life Friday, Sept. 2. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Breckenridge. Burial will follow in the Moon Cemetery. A visitation time for family and friends was set for 6 to 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 5,  at Melton-Kitchens Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.

Russell 'Sonny' Pendleton was born February 5, 1929 in Stephens County, to Hubert Monroe and Susie Pearl Pendleton.  He was raised in Breckenridge and graduated from Breckenridge High School.  He served two years in the US Army, stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, before returning to Breckenridge. Sonny was employed by Warren Petroleum and after his retirement, ran his own welding service.

Survivors include his two daughters; Pam Raglin and husband, Doyle of Breckenridge and Donna Duncan and husband, Randy of Lovington, New Mexico; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  Sonny is also survived by one sister Joyce Burris of Breckenridge; two nephews, Roy Miller and Sam Cockerell.

Sonny was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Pendleton and two sisters, Allan Louise Cockerell and Faye Nell Miller and one nephew, Hubert Russell Cockerell.

Doyle Wayne ‘Hawk’ Weatherby

Doyle Wayne "Hawk" Weatherby passed peacefully on Sept. 5, at his home in Odessa after a short battle with lung cancer. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Martha.

Family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. He felt that funerals were a celebration of life and always wanted people to wear bright colors.

His Celebration of Life was at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Crossroads Fellowship.

He was born in Woodson, Texas, on May 21, 1933. He lived in Iraan and graduated high school in Breckenridge.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He was honorably discharged at the same rank as when he went in. He attended North Texas State University where he received his teaching certificate in history and met Martha, the love of his life, they were married in Fort Worth. His college degree afforded him the privilege of becoming the chief post hole digger for a canopy company. They moved to Odessa in 1959 after living in Fort Worth.

In Odessa, they raised two children, Kay Kay and Charlie Chas, while he worked for, Hughes Tool Company. Doyle then went to work selling grounds-keeping equipment to schools, colleges and also golf courses at Goldthwaite’s of Texas.

He then began the Doyle Weatherby Company, an independent chemical broker and sold to Halliburton, BJ, Western Co. and other small independent dealers. He was the co-founder of DorChem/Permian Chemical Co.; the originator of Ratliff Ranch Golf Links, the first municipal golf course in Odessa and developed Lil' Divot, a children's golf club.  Doyle also managed at Piggies BBQ.

He was a lifelong member of Antioch Christian Church. He was an adult Sunday school teacher for 20 plus years, he served as a deacon and an elder. He was also recognized as an elder emeritus.

He loved his wife Martha, his children, Kay Kay and Chas, their spouses, Roger and Marcy, his four grandchildren and his six great grandchildren. He also loved the Texas Rangers, golf, talking politics and history, anyone who could give him a good argument, laughing, a good practical joke, visiting with total strangers and hawking apples in the produce section of any grocery store.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Chas and Argieree Weatherby and a brother Ralph Dorwin Weatherby.

Survivors include his wife, Martha; one daughter Kay Kay Zimmerman and her husband, Roger of Hamilton; one grandson, Noah and wife, Penney of Flower Mound along with their three sons; one son, Charlie Chas Weatherby and his wife, Marcy along with their daughter, Casey Guerrero and her husband, Johnny of Odessa along with their two children, Lanie and Jett; their son, Kyle and wife, Stephanie of Round Rock, along with their son Charlie Duke.

He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Betty Ann Harmon Baker

Betty Ann Harmon Baker, 83, of Mingus went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 7, surrounded by her family at her home.

A Mass will be at 11:30 a.m Saturday, Sept. 10, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Strawn. A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at St. John’s Catholic Church with a Rosary to follow at 7 p.m.

Betty was born Nov. 25, 1932, to George Lee Harmon and Pernie Cammila Parsons Harmon in Thurber, Texas. She graduated from Gordon High School and soon met the love of her life, William J. Baker; they married Jan. 14, 1949, in Palo Pinto, Texas.

Betty was a member of the Mingus Ladies Club since 1991 and was the Secretary and Treasurer for the Gordon Lions Club; Mayor Protem of Mingus, and was on Gordon’s School Board. She was a caregiver and sat with many ladies and gentlemen when they needed care.

She is survived by three sons, Larry Michael Baker, Sr. of Salem, Oregon; Jerry Patrick Baker of Orlando, Florida; and Michael Baker, Jr. of Strawn, Texas; two daughters, Frankie Elaine Lee, of Mingus, Texas; and Pamela Ann Ezzell of Borger, Texas; one brother, Clarence Wright of Breckenridge; one sister, Sheryl Darlene Moss of Fort Worth; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Strawn.

George R. Jones, 80, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 14, in Graham.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, in Morrison Funeral Home Chapel.

George was born April 5, 1936, in Menard to the late John Henry and Nora Cassandra “Ivy” Jones.

He married Emma Maurine Stanley in 1958, in Breckenridge and she preceded him in death Jan. 6, 2013.

George retired from E & H Drilling and was a member of Country Road Fellowship.

Survivors include, two daughters, Kathy Swartz and husband, Bryan of Dallas; Sandy Jones, of Graham; one son, Bub Allen Jones and wife, Dawn of Graham; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Mary Helen Simmons was born February 23, 1938 in Young County, Texas to parents, Guy Simmons and Edith Wright Simmons. She attended schools in Olney. On March 27, 1955, Mary married Milton Smith. She moved to Albany in 1991 and was a member of the Church of Christ. Mary was a homemaker and supported her husband through his career in the Navy. She enjoyed gardening and sewing, and also liked to attend Bible studies. Her relationship with God was her main focus and she loved her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Edith Simmons; her husband, Milton Smith; one son, Raymond Smith; one brother and one sister.
 
Mrs. Smith is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Whitmore and husband, Mike of Albany; one son, Robert Smith and wife, Verna of Lubbock; one daughter-in-law, Linda Smith of Livingston; eight grandchildren, Rebecca Smith, Zach Smith, Landon Smith, Hillarie Smith, Dustin Smith, Brittany Smith, Tyler Smith, Jared Smith; eight great grandchildren, Cody Swanner, Stephen Swanner, Haley Swanner, Ashley Swanner, Kade Hudgens, Meredith Hudgens, Elijah Smith, Elizabeth Smith; one sister-in-law, Lois Taggart; one brother-in-law, Randolph Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Beverly Rue Osborne

Beverly Rue Osborne, age 86 of Breckenridge, passed away Sunday, Sept. 25. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Don Bearden officiating. A private interment will be held prior to the memorial service. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 26, at Morehart Mortuary.

Beverly Rue Virdell was born Aug. 7, 1930, in Brady, Texas, to parents Marvin Marion Virdell and Velma Dee Hill Virdell. Beverly graduated from Lohn High School and then earned her Bachelor’s degree in home economics from Southwest Texas State University and was a member of the sorority Alpha Delta Pi. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and later the Breckenridge Woman’s Forum. She married Frank Patrick Osborne, Jr. on August 24, 1952 in Rochelle, Texas. In 1979, the Osbornes moved from Snyder to Breckenridge. Throughout her 32 years of teaching, 12 of which were in Breckenridge, Mrs. Osborne was involved in organizations including Texas State Teacher’s Association and Texas Home Economics Association.

Throughout her teaching career she touched numerous lives always demonstrating care, concern, and love. Her children thank the many students who returned this care and love by visiting her while she was rehabilitating and in the hospital. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and enjoyed participating in Bible studies including the Community Christian Bible Studies (CCBS).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Velma Virdell; husband, Frank Patrick Osborne, Jr.; one son, Frank Patrick Osborne III; granddaughter, Ruth Pitts; two sisters, Ann Deeds, Odell Hobbs; and one brother, Jon Virdell.

Beverly is survived by her four children; Dee Osborne Pitts of Round Rock, Patricia Osborne Battle and husband, Richard of Austin, Dianne Osborne Sublett and husband, Gary of Breckenridge, Danny Osborne and wife, Donna of Abilene; two sisters, June Rickman Parish of Sherman, Gayle Baxter of Plano; grandchildren, Justin Osborne, Crystal Osborne, Keenan Osborne, Destiny Osborne, Courtney Battle Peterka, Bradley Sublett, Austin Sublett, John Pitts, Sarah Pitts Fisk, Alex Osborne, Nicole Osborne, Brandon Jordan, and Mandi Jordan; great grandchildren, Jonathan Fisk, Ashley Lynn Osborne, Tristan Osborne, Noah Osborne, Emma Osborne, Isabelle Wolatz, and Joseph Peterka. She leaves behind her loving niece, Heather Deeds Newsome, who she considered a daughter; and several nieces and nephews that were near and dear to her heart.

Her family will miss her steadfast prayers. Daily she prayed for them and others. It is a well-known fact that she was a prayer warrior. Her faith was her life and she was a faithful servant and living vessel for her Savior. She was truly a fisher of men. The family thanks their loving family member, loyal friend, and caretaker, Polly Beeler, for the love, devotion and care of their mother in her final weeks of life. Also, to Dr. Prater and Solaris Hospice for the care in the final days of her life.

Mark Allen Searcy

Mark Allen Searcy, 59, of Weatherford, passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, at Plaza Hospital in Fort Worth.  

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Galbreaith-Pickard Funeral Chapel, 913 N. Elm Street, in Weatherford.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

Mark was born on April 23, 1957, in Berkley, California, to Robert A. and Shirley Searcy. 

He was a proud member of the Brotherhood of Sheet Metal Workers Local 104.  

Mark enjoyed outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and kayaking.

He was also a talented and accomplished photographer.

Mark is survived by his mother, Shirley Martin of Weatherford; brother, Michael Searcy of Carrolton, Texas; sister, Lynn Richards of Mesa, Arizona; and by his niece and nephew, Austin and Ashley Delaplane of Mesa, Arizona.

Mark was preceded in death by his father, Robert A. Searcy.

LaVerle Joyce Wilkinson Tennison

LaVerle Joyce Wilkinson Tennison, 78, passed Sept. 27. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. at the Pearl cemetery in Pearl, Texas, Saturday, Oct. 1. Memorial services will follow at noon at the Pearl Church of Christ.

LaVerle was born in Ireland, Texas on Oct. 7, 1937. She was the daughter of Boone and Leota Wilkinson. LaVerles the sister of; Ray, Tommie Faye, Jim, Mack, Mary and Tim; all of whom she deeply loved.

LaVerle was raised in Coryell County and graduated from Pearl High School in 1954. She moved to Fort Worth and worked at the United Finance Company. It is there she met her future husband Brady Tennison. LaVerle and Brady were married on Feb. 1, 1956. LaVerle and Brady moved to Breckenridge in 1981.

LaVerle was a member of the Elliot Street Church of Christ, she enjoyed her family there and was an active member. Brady and LaVerle opened the “Keeping Room Bed and Breakfast” in 1997. LaVerle enjoyed receiving guests and preparing breakfast along with a host of baked goods including her grandchildren’s favorite, buttermilk pie.

She and Brady have five children; Michael, Mary, Pamela, Angela and Thomas. LaVerle loved her grandchildren and was the proud MeMaw to; Amy, Jennifer, Michelle, Emilee, Ella, Jacob, Joseph, Madi, Brady, Carly, Austin and Emma Kate. She is the great-grandmother to; Tara, Tiffany, Trey, Addi, Kyleigh, and Mason.

LaVerle “MeMaw” Tennison was greatly loved and will be greatly missed, until we meet again.

Rex Wiloth, 76, died Saturday, Oct. 1. Graveside services with Rex Boggs officiating will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Gunsight Cemetery. Rex Carl Wiloth was born on April 27, 1940, in Cisco, to Leo Wiloth and Rosa Lee Carr Wiloth.

He married Betty Boles on Dec. 23, 1965, in Gunsight. He had been employed by Vintage Homes, moving and setting up mobile homes and also worked for the City of Breckenridge in the street department.

Survivors include one daughter, Twanna Huffman and husband, Kevin of Gunsight; one son, Darron Wiloth and wife, Pam of Breckenridge; brothers-in-law, Hurley Boles and wife, Donna and Larry Boles and wife, Jan all of Breckenridge; grandchildren, Sheena Huffman and Randy Koger, Odell “Doc” Huffman, Payton Robertson, Brigston Robertson, Morgan and Mikayla Roberston, Jessie Wells, Amber George, Matt George and Sarah Jones; and five great-grandchildren.

Margaret Ann Blackburn, age 94, went home peacefully to be with her Lord Monday, Oct. 3.

Graveside services for Margaret were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Breckenridge Cemetery under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.

Margaret was born Aug. 8, 1922 in Victoria, Texas, to Paul Emerson and Vilas Simmons Leonard. She married the love of her life George S. Blackburn in June of 1943. She was a graduate of Beaumont High School and of Hotel Dieu School of Nursing. She loved being a nurse and loved her patients. She worked as a surgical nurse and the Director of Nurses at both Stephens Memorial Hospital and the Throckmorton County Memorial Hospital.

Margaret is survived by a daughter, Sandy Rogers and husband, Dick of Breckenridge, a son Buddy Blackburn and wife, Nita of Slaton, Texas, four grandchildren; Margaret Neill, Susie Lowry, Sandy Johnson and Elizabeth Rogers and six great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by two step-sisters; Mary Linton of Scottsdale, Arizona and Jodie McMahon of San Antonio.

She is preceded in death by her parents and step-mother, Charlsie Leonard, a sister, Frances Shurley and a brother, Bud Leonard and a precious grandson, Brent Rogers.
