Henry Everett Herring
Henry Everett Herring was born into the arms of angels on Jan. 17, 2019 in Lubbock to parents, Josh and Emily Herring and big brother, Clark Sullivan Herring. Henry was given the nickname, “Stitch,” by his big brother. He is survived by his parents; his big brother; maternal grandparents, Johnny, D’Ann Spencer and the late Kenny Dobbs; paternal grandparents, Joe and Lori Herring; maternal great-grandparents, Mike and Carroll Woodall and the late Lary Sullivan; paternal great-grandparents, Virginia Karl, the late Jerry Karl and the late Oleta and Dan Herring; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18 in the Pioneer Cemetery in Graham with Donita Lea officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.

Herb Smallwood
Herb Smallwood, 92, of Breckenridge, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Rex Boggs officiating. Interment will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29 in the Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Herbert Gene Smallwood was born on Nov. 19, 1926 to Everett W. Smallwood and Ossie Easter Lee Smallwood in Matador, Texas. After high school, he attended college and joined the United States Air Force. He met and married Lona Mae Liston on Dec. 31, 1949. They lived a full military life until he lost her in 2008. After his retirement from the military, Herb enjoyed remodeling homes, traveling in his camper and visiting with their grandchildren. On March 2, 2009, Herb married Grace Evelyn Shelton in Hurst, Texas. He lost Evelyn in 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Ossie Smallwood; two wives; and two brothers, Jesse W. Smallwood and Clyde A. Smallwood.
Mr. Smallwood is survived by one daughter, Cathy L. Loucks and husband Buck of Iowa Park; one son, Jon A. Smallwood and wife Ellen of Bedford; three step-children, Dickie Garrison and wife Shirley of Red Rock, David Garrison and wife Susan of Sterling City, Debra Wilson and husband Jack of Lubbock; one sister, Dollie M. Robinson of Rio Honda; four grandchildren, Jennifer Loucks, Jesse Loucks, Jacob Smallwood, Sarah Guthrie; and seven great-grandchildren.

Eddie Cates
BRECKENRIDGE — Eddie Cates, 65, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 20 at The Lighthouse Church with Bishop W.C. Roach and Rev. Eddie Joe Cates was born on Sept. 4, 1953 in Edmond, Oklahoma. He was raised in Breckenridge by his parents, Oliver Parks Cates and Margie Faye Westmoreland Cates. In his younger years, he worked as a carpenter, building numerous homes in Breckenridge and Stephens County. He also had a paint and body shop and worked in the oilfield. In his later years, Eddie drove a truck for several companies, including Texas Tank Trucks, EMCO and Roe Trucking. On Nov. 14, 2015, he married Patricia Porteous in Breckenridge. Eddie was a former member of Gunsight Baptist Church and a more recent member of The Lighthouse Church. Eddie enjoyed fishing, boating and riding his Harley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Margie Cates; his grandmother, Ileta Greer and husband Chip; and granddaughter, Kennedy Cates.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Cates; five children, Kevin Cates and wife Emily, Eric Cates and wife Angela, Courtney Cates Youngblood and husband Michael, Joanne Stockton, Kayce Cates Smalley and husband Ryan; fifteen grandchildren, Hudson, Everett, Eli, Campbell and Jackson Cates, Austin and Cooper Cates, Cayden, Maverick and Cutter Youngblood, Malia Stockton, Ethan and Skylar Leaper, Samantha, Karter and Karsyn Smalley; one brother, Jesse Cates; and numerous step-children and step-grandchildren.

John Tom Bloxom, the son of Tom and Louise Rhodes Bloxom, was born in Breckenridge, Texas on Oct. 20, 1950. From a very early age, John Tom could be found working at the family business, Jess Bloxom and Son Feed. He attended Breckenridge schools, where he participated in 4H and FFA, graduating in 1969. He later attended Cisco Junior College, majoring in General Studies. Mr. Bloxom worked hard as a manager at Bloxom Feed and later made a name for himself as he expanded his interests into ranching and the oil and gas industry. He was well known throughout the community as a kind and generous man, but his foremost love was for his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Bloxom is survived by his three children, Andrea Dixon and husband Jason of Granbury, Jessica Bloxom of Los Angeles, Calif., Evan Bloxom and wife Kristian of Granbury; one sister, Elizabeth McNallen and husband Don of Fort Worth; his grandchildren, Katie Nichols, Rebecca Dixon, Reagan Dixon, Benjamin Dixon, Harper Bloxom, Oliver Bloxom, all of Granbury; and one nephew, Spencer McNallen and family of Fort Worth.

Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Lamar Conner
Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Lamar Conner went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 5, after a prolonged illness.
Beth was born Feb. 16, 1935 in Crystal Springs, Miss. to Leon and Edna Moore Lamar. She had an older brother, Raymond, a sister, Helen and a younger brother, Boyd, “Buddy.” Her early childhood years were spent in Crystal Springs; however, she was orphaned at age 12 and spent her junior high and high school years in Colorado and Edinburg, Texas with family. Beth lived in Texas for 50 years and returned to Hazlehurst 23 years ago.
Beth was a long-time active member of the Hazlehurst United Methodist Church and served on the Nurture Committee. She was a member of the Hazlehurst Garden Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Among her many other interests she was a fantastic cook and she kept her family, friends and community supplied with brownies and peanut brittle. She loved people and was very outgoing and enjoyed her family, friends and her bridge clubs.
Beth was preceded in death by her parents Leon and Edna Lamar, her sister Helen Wilson, her brothers Buddy and Raymond Lamar. Survivors include her son, Stephen J. Talley and wife Loretta; granddaughters, Samantha, Courtney and husband Cullen, and Victoria; sister-in-laws, Ina Lamar and Shirley Lamar; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Beth had a servant’s heart and the spiritual gift of hospitality. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. The family is grateful to Dr. Preston McDonnell and all the many, many family and friends who cared for her during her illness. He worked as a floor contractor and enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing pool. Brad was preceded in death by his father, Billy Kincaid, Sr.; his grandparents, William John “W.J.” Booth, Ola Mae Funderburk, Bertha Mae Thomas; his step-father, Don Plott; and one nephew, Donnie Wayne Wiggins.

Joanne Therese Smoltz was born Nov. 26, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan to parents John Smoltz and Theresa Gehringer Smoltz. She married Peter Sroka, Jr. in Allen Park, Michigan at St. Cabrini Church. Joanne was a stay at home mom and loved watching old T.V. shows and coloring. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Theresa Smoltz.

Saloen Say
BRECKENRIDGE — Saloen Say, 72, of Breckenridge, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Sunday Jan. 27 at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Chad Ezell officiating. Visitation was held prior to the service at 1 p.m. at Morehart Mortuary.
Saloen Say was born June 8, 1946 in the Battambong province of Cambodia. He served as a Sergeant in the Royal Cambodian Army and defended his country from the Khmer Rouge regime. Saloen married Savat Meas in 1976. Through immigration sponsorship from Jim and Jean Rominger, he moved to his final home of Breckenridge in 1978. After moving to Texas, he built mobile homes for five years. In 1985 he began working at Ezell Aviation restoring WWII aircraft for the beloved Nelson & Dude Ezell.
Saloen was an avid fisherman, enjoyed tending to livestock and was endearingly known for feeding cows leftover donuts. His other hobbies included gardening, caring for his fish pond, and dedicating his time and efforts to other Cambodian families.
Mr. Say is survived by his wife, Savat Say; seven children, including, Sophin Say and wife, Shannon, Sara Say and significant other, Greg Pugh; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bill Layne
BRECKENRIDGE — Bill Layne, 88, of Breckenridge, passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2019. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28 at New Hope Baptist Church #3 with Rev. Ronnie Guess and Rev. Charles West officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Zion Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. William David Layne was born Feb. 24, 1930 in Strawn, Texas to Benjamin Harrison Layne and Susan Eleanor Roberson Layne. He graduated from Strawn High School in 1948. On Dec. 4, 1949, Bill married Marlene Langford at the New Hope Baptist Church #3 parsonage. Bill served in the United States Army until he was honorably discharged in 1954. After his discharge, the Laynes returned to Fort Worth, where he was employed by Lockheed Martin until he retired in 1973. Bill then worked for the City of Hurst as the lead man of the Parks Department until his final retirement in 1990. In 1995, the Laynes moved to Breckenridge and were members of New Hope Baptist Church #3. Bill enjoyed fishing, gardening, working in the yard, and watching football and baseball, especially the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers. When he wasn’t spending time at the family farm, you could often find him at the local Dairy Queen where he was a frequent diner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Susan Layne; his wife, Marlene Layne; and four siblings.
Bill is survived by his son, Gary David Layne and wife Denise of Breckenridge; two sisters, Jewell Smith of Strawn, Jacquelyn Parsons of Hurst; two grandchildren, Crissy Layne and Shane Denham of Watauga, Brian Williamson and Donna Rutland of Cisco; three great grandchildren, Caeden, Jaxon, and Jaedyn Denise; and numerous other relatives.

BRECKENRIDGE — Edith Walker, 85, of Breckenridge, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2019. Edith Virginia Stephens was born Nov. 5, 1933 in Snyder, Texas to parents, James Thomas “JT” Stephens and Zada Virginia Cummings Stephens. She attended school in Snyder and married Robert “Bob” Lee Walker, Jr. on Nov. 26, 1950. The Walkers moved to Breckenridge in 1990, when Bob retired. Edith was a member of the Elliott Street Church of Christ and enjoyed playing dominoes with her Bible class group. She also loved to sew and bake; often making goodies for the beauty shop she went to every Friday. She was preceded in death by her parents, JT and Zada Stephens; her husband, Robert Walker, Jr.; four siblings, Milton Stephens, Lonnie Stephens, Mardel Stephens and Mildred Flynn.
Mrs. Walker is survived by three daughters, Virginia Welsh and husband Barry, Teresa Morris, both of Breckenridge, Rejeanē Moore and husband Randy of Beeville; four siblings, Leonard Stephens, Daphna Worsham, Mary Boyd and Sandra Perkins; nine grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

On Dec. 4, 1949, Bill married Marlene Langford at the New Hope Baptist Church #3 parsonage. Bill served in the United States Army until he was honorably discharged in 1954. After his discharge, the Laynes returned to Fort Worth, where he was employed by Lockheed Martin until he retired in 1973. Bill then worked for the City of Hurst as the lead man of the Parks Department until his final retirement in 1990. In 1995, the Laynes moved to Breckenridge and were members of New Hope Baptist Church #3. Bill enjoyed fishing, gardening, working in the yard, and watching football and baseball, especially the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers. When he wasn’t spending time at the family farm, you could often find him at the local Dairy Queen where he was a frequent diner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Susan Layne; his wife, Marlene Layne; and four siblings.
Bill is survived by his son, Gary David Layne and wife Denise of Breckenridge; two sisters, Jewell Smith of Strawn, Jacquelyn Parsons of Hurst; two grandchildren, Crissy Layne and Shane Denham of Watauga, Brian Williamson and Donna Rutland of Cisco; three great grandchildren, Caeden, Jaxon, and Jaedyn Denise; and numerous other relatives.
